Avoid Criminals in the Philippines

Setups in hotel rooms - legal age lady invites an underage girl to the room (a "sister," "cousin," etc.) - next thing you know a police officer will be at the door. You will need an attorney!

Pickpockets in malls, in jeepneys, on sidewalks, in crowds.

Robbery at gunpoint - stay alert.

Be careful where you walk at night.

Ask someone where not to walk (eg. a security guard or a desk clerk at your hotel.)

Snatchers - will grab the necklace off your girl's neck and run.

Someone tries to befriend you - "Hey Joe, I've been to the US also..." - don't answer, just keep walking.

Someone tries to sell you a gun - it is illegal for foreigners to own guns - see self defense in the Philippines.

Be especially alert in bus stations.

On the bus, sit near the front of the bus so that you can make a hasty exit if armed robbers get on the bus and start demanding money (advice from a police officer.)

Carry some kind of traveler's security door lock to use when staying in hotel rooms. Try it when you preview the room. Make sure it fits the door before you check in.

On two occasions someone has tried to get into my hotel room in the Philippines. One time, at a cheap hotel in Batangas, the person used a tool, which left marks on the door and door frame, while we were sleeping. In the morning I noticed a lot of pry marks and it was hard to open the door. The other time, at the Mariche Apartelle in Cavite (across from SM Bacoor Mall), we were awake and heard someone trying our door. Both times I had inserted a steel lock like the one in the second image. It foiled both attempts to get in.

If you would like to order a lock, like the one I use, contact me. This lock works on doors which swing into the room.

Here is an idea for a makeshift lock made out of a common dinner fork. It does not appear very secure, but it looks like it would make some noise if entry was attempted, and it would provide more security than no lock at all.

Avoid Criminals. DO NOT do the following:

Do not wear gold jewelry in the Philippines.
Do not wear diamond rings in the Philippines.
Do not wear expensive glasses in the Philippines.
Do not wear expensive watches in the Philippines.
Do not display expensive cell phones or tablets.
Do not drive expensive cars in the Philippines.
Do not carry a lot of cash.
Do not hire taxicabs that have no signs on the doors or on the windowsills inside the car.
Do not walk on dark streets.
Do not be a belligerent, overbearing, bossy foreigner.

Never call anyone "stupid" if you value your life.
Always be "nice" and respectful.

Maintain a low profile as much as possible.
However, all Anglos are considered "rich" by the majority of Filipinos. In fact, all foreigners are considered rich.

Do not buy gold jewelry or diamonds or any expensive items for your Filipino girlfriend. Unless she is rich by Philippine standards, she or some member of her family will probably eventually pawn them (if they have not already been stolen from her by a stranger, "friend" or family member.) Save these purchases for after you are married. Keep in mind she may be a scammer.

Be alert and have a good time in the Philippines.

Go get your teeth cleaned and then have them tell you "Oh, you need a deep cleaning now." How much is that? "Oh, it will be $350." So, I said to the dentist, 

"What a scam! Who dreamed this one up? It used to be that when you got a cleaning it was a thorough cleaning. Say you hire a maid to clean your house and pay her then she says, 'Oh, sir you really need a deep cleaning now....' " Same, same HUH?! He did not appreciate my comment. He would not keep me as a "patient."

Try to find an honest dental practice in the USA nowadays! Oh, by the way, in the Philippines a cleaning is a cleaning. No BS. And only the dentists do the cleanings. No cleanings done by assistants!

Visit the Philippines to meet ladies. 

A good way to avoid being scammed is to come to the Philippines and meet young ladies in shopping malls, stores, churches and restaurants. Most Filipinas are approachable and easy to talk with. Most you meet will speak English; it is taught in schools all over the Philippines. There are rich young ladies and middle-class young ladies. But there are many more poor young ladies. Search online to find your potential Filipina matches. Many American men have done so and a lot of them have found and married some amazing ladies.

I honestly believe that no matter what age you are, what you look like or how much or how little money you have, you will be able to find Miss Right. There are about 300,000 Americans living in the Philippines full time, in cities all over the country. In Angeles City alone there are about 30,000 Americans. Some are single but many are married to beautiful and loving Filipinas. Americans can be seen walking, riding in trikes, eating in fast food restaurants, dining in fine restaurants and shopping in malls in the Philippines with their girlfriends, wives and many with their families. Especially in the SM Clark mall in Angeles City.

Take a break and spend a holiday in the Philippines. You may very well meet a lovely Filipina and fall in love. Or plan to go there to meet a few of your favorite Filipina chat mates, like I did. I wound up married to a Filipina. We married in the Philippines.

If your goal is marriage you are required to go meet with her in the Philippines. You cannot marry any foreigner and bring her to the USA unless you can document meeting her in her country. Keep copies of emails, photos of the two of you together and with her family (with time and date stamp), times and dates of meeting, brief diary of places you have been together, airline tickets if you travel in country with her. I have gone through the process and will write about it soon. It is complicated but we did it without an attorney and saved a lot of money. If you are employed, you will be limited by the length of your vacation. If you are retired, you can stay in the Philippines until you have both made the requisite visits to the US Embassy in Manila and the process is completed. It will be well worth it. Bring her back to the USA with you or rent an apartment, buy a condo, or buy a house with her and stay and live in the Philippines.

Warning, do some research to avoid being scammed

The "Christian Filipina" site has some advice about avoiding scammers and some sad stories about some who have been scammed (in the comments section). 

Another word of caution, never send money to anyone you meet online and have not met in person.

A respectable Filipina or Filipino will not ask for money online. Beware, there are always a few "bad apples." Some of the most effective scams are, requests for money to help pay medical expenses for self or a relative, financial help because "my purse was stolen" (or lost), "need help to pay my school tuition," and the list goes on.

Beware of scammers from other countries. There are scammers online from a lot of countries. Search "online dating scams." Read more about how scammers using Russia and African countries top the list of countries with the most scammers.

I hear that real estate is appreciating well in the Philippines. I think that applies mostly to residential and condo properties in quality developments.

A foreigner can purchase a condo in his own name but cannot buy a house or land in his own name. A foreigner may lease a property.

If a foreigner marries a Filipino then he may purchase property in his and his spouse's name.

It is best to consult with a Filipino attorney about how to arrange your purchase and in whose name to buy it. There are methods that are not widely publicized.

Be sure to hire an attorney to review your purchase plans and to review all documents before finalizing a purchase. Ask the attorney to verify the history of the title the seller holds to the property. Real estate can be tricky, so protect yourself by seeking advice of professionals.

Most houses and apartments in the Philippines have steel bars at the windows and have steel gated car parks.

Safe Taxis in the Philippines?

 Safety tips for riding in cabs.

These tips apply whatever country you are in.

1. Do not ride in taxis that do not have meters!
2. Always tell the driver you expect him to use the meter. If he won't then don't get in the cab.
3. Always make sure that the meter is reset before you depart. If he does not reset it, get out and get       another cab.
4. Never get in a Philippine taxi that has anyone else in it. Only ride in a taxi that has no other passengers. The others could be robbers.
5. Check and see if the cab number is painted on the interior window sills. If it is not, do not ride in that cab (text the company name and taxi number to a friend or relative as a safety precaution).
6. Check and see that there are inside handles on all doors and that there is a visible door lock knob.
7. Actually try locking and pulling the door handle as if opening it before getting in the cab. Then keep the windows up and doors locked. Ask the driver to lock the front doors.
8. If a driver suggest that he take a shortcut tell him no, unless you are familiar with the area.
9. If the driver drives like a maniac ask him to drive safely or tell him you want to go down at the next corner. Most taxis do not have seat belts for your safety. After one ride in a taxi I realized why it is so dangerous to ride on motorcycles in the Philippines. The driver was inches from one he passed and tailgated very close to another at high speed.
10. Look to see if there are seat belts for the rear seat. If not you may want to find a different taxi. Usually only the newest ones will have safety belts. Many times you may need to ride in taxis without seat belts or wait a long time to find one with them.
11. At bus stations there may be a car or two, parked inside the bus area, offering taxi service. I have been approached by drivers but the cars had no signs on them. I suggest you never get in one of them. Better to go out on the street and hail a taxi. There will be young guys who will offer to hail a cab for you. They will expect a small tip (maybe 20 pesos.) It is worth it. Then ask to be sure the driver will use the meter. If a driver asks if you can add an extra 30 to 50 pesos just say yes and give it to him when you pay. It's a hard job and I think they really earn it.

Some more advice about taxis

• avoid hailing a taxi on the street
• only enter metered taxis from a reliable company and insist the meter be turned on
• prefer hotel transportation, official airport taxis, or a ridesharing app
• never share taxis with strangers
• ask that the windows being rolled up and doors locked at all times

MGE taxis are found in Metro Manila and Quezon City. I have not confirmed that the above phone numbers are current.

MGE and Yellow Cab are two companies which are permitted to pick up at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Yellow cab has an added fee plus higher rates no matter where your service starts. Jeepneys, tricycles and pedicabs are not permitted at the international airport If you want to ride a jeepney ask a guard if you can get on a jeepney by walking to the entrance to the airport.

Hailing A Taxi

Try to hail a cab in the city center of Manila, they will NOT stop. Near the Ayala train station where Glorietta Mall, Landmark Department Store and SM Ayala Mall are, you MUST wait in line at taxi stands, without exception, and in the evening when many are leaving the malls you may wait up to 45 minutes for your turn to get in a cab. These taxi stands are monitored by security guards, they will note the ID number of the taxi on a slip of paper and hand it to you. This is for your security, you can call a trusted friend and notify them which cab you are in so in the event you are hijacked they can report it to the authorities. And it probably discourages drivers from trying anything funny.

The taxi ID letters and numbers should be painted on window sills inside all doors.
If the ID is not visible do not ride in that cab. Whenever you ride in a taxi be sure to text someone you know with the ID and tell them where you are riding from and to.

MGE and Yellow cabs are probably the newest and best cabs to ride in. And, they are the ones most likely to have seat belts.
However, we have ridden in cabs of many different companies.

About taxi drivers in the Philippines

It is best that you approach a taxi where the driver is seated inside, either in a bus station or on the street. There are drivers who may approach you who are driving unmarked "taxis." Do not use these.

If a driver tries to charge you a flat fee for a trip just say "no" or if you are already seated inside, get out and get another cab. The flat fee will always be higher than a metered fare.

It is common for driver's to ask foreigners to include 50 pesos extra. When I was new to the Philippines I refused. But, after some time there I began to realize just how hard it is to make a living as a taxi driver, so I started agreeing to the extra fee.

If you get a driver who has a nice newer taxi it might be a good idea to get his cell phone number and call 1/2 hour ahead of time whenever you need a taxi ride. Be sure to ask what days he works this week. He will pick you up. We had an MGE driver who would take us to the hospital and pick us up when we were ready to leave. He also waited for us as we shopped along a street and moved the cab to be near us as we walked down the street.  He then helped us load things we had purchased. It is great to have a personal "driver." Our driver, who said he was a former police officer, told us that MGE tests its drivers regularly for drug use.

TIRED TAXI DRIVERS

Driver's work 24 hour shifts and have days off. They sleep on and off in the cab during their shift.

Once we rode in the next Yellow Cab that was in line at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
I was told by the "dispatcher" at the taxi booth that our driver would be wide awake because he would have been sleeping in his cab until he got in the taxi line near the terminal doors.
Well, he was not very 'wide awake.' We left the airport at about 11 p.m. to go to Angeles City. During the 40 kilometer trip on the NLEX (an expressway) the driver showed signs of being tired. Several times he took both hands off the wheel, removed his eyeglasses and rubbed his eyes with one hand while holding his glasses in the other. Not something that inspires confidence in the Yellow Cab company or any company whose drivers work 24-hour shifts. Fortunately, the speed limit is only 100 km per hour or about 62 miles per hour for cars and jeepneys on the Expressway between the airport and Angeles City. The speed limit for trucks and buses is 80 kph or about 50 mph. However, I have been in many buses which have been driven faster than the cars. Some bus drivers drive like they are in sports cars. They get paid by how many passengers they have carried during their shifts.

I advise you, if you will be traveling far, to stay in a hotel and travel by taxi in the daytime. The same advise applies to traveling by bus.

Driver's must pay a "boundary"; in a sense they rent the cab and then try to make enough money to pay their boundary and still make a day's living. The last I heard the taxi boundary was about 1,500 pesos for a 24 hour period of time. They often sleep in their cab between fares.

If you are considering renting a car or a motorcycle, think twice. As far as I have learned, there is no collision insurance available. If the vehicle you rent gets damaged, YOU will pay for the damages. However, you may be able to buy good coverage if you buy a young or new car in the Philippines. As for motorcycles, due to the reckless habits of many drivers, it is far more dangerous to ride a motorcycle in the Philippines than in the USA. See my article about driving in the Philippines.

Another factor about driving as a foreigner in the Philippines is that you may be a target of some. You are perceived as being "rich" here. Pedestrians and other drivers may see you as an opportunity to make money. If you are involved in an "accident" it is very possible that you will end up paying much more than would a Filipino. Many foreigners hire a driver or, if married, will let their Filipino spouse drive.

Most taxis do not have seat belts. There is a good chance the newest taxis will have seat belts. Yellow cab and MGE often have seat belts. I use Yellow Cab or MGE when I arrive at the airport.

Guides and Drivers: Guides get $20 to $50 a day, 

says Clemente, and drivers about $4 to $5. Tip taxi 

drivers about 10 percent.

Dollars Accepted? Yes! "If you tip in dollars, they 

will love you forever," says Clemente, "because it's 

considered better-quality money" than the Filipino 

peso.

P.S. "If you get stopped by the police, stick 200 pesos 

(about $4) in your I.D.," says Clemente–and he is only 

half joking. Men in blue uniforms who often help you 

park your car should get 10 to 20 pesos–about 20 to 50 

cents."

We wanted a "Consent to Travel" just in case someone at immigration in the Philippines or in the USA should ask for a consent form signed by my Filipino wife. It states that she is giving her permission for our daughter to travel out of the country with me.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine recommended an attorney who I had visited once before. We called ahead to be sure he would be in his office in the afternoon. He said that he would be there. After visiting SM Clark City Mall, we took a jeepney to his office. His office is about 20 meters or about 60 feet from the Garden Dine Restaurant on MacArthur Highway.

He prepared the "Consent to Travel" letter for us and notarized it after my wife signed it. We made 3 originals just in case any got lost. We kept each in a separate place for safekeeping. As far as I know there are almost no safe deposit boxes available in the Philippines. I have never been offered one by any bank. I have heard that if one has a large enough balance in an account, one may be able to get a safe deposit box at a bank. Talk to bankers yourself and inquire about it. If you want a safe deposit box, maybe you can find a bank which will provide one.

Angeles City is in the province of Pampanga in the central section of the island of Luzon.
Angeles City is about 84 kilometers North of where we lived in Manila.

             Breakfast and Dinner Buffet

Having lived in Angeles City for about 2 years we have tried quite a few restaurants there. We were on a budget, so we often ate at fast food restaurants in the area. However, once in a while we would dine at popular full-service restaurants.

In my opinion, the best restaurant we have dined at is at the Clarkton Hotel on Don Juico Ave. in the Balibago section (follow Fields Ave. going West, away from MacArthur Highway).

Buffet service has apparently been suspended. Contact Clarkton to inquire about food service.

Now there is a large new menu and dining service at Clarkton.

The German chef used to serve up an all you can eat Breakfast Buffet (7 a.m. - 1 p.m. daily) and a great all you could eat Dinner Buffet (5 p.m. - 10 p.m. daily. Don't miss it!). These buffet hours were accurate as of August 25, 2012. We have never tried the breakfast buffet but have dined at the dinner buffet. This buffet has a grand menu of American and European foods. At Thanksgiving the chef prepares a buffet that is nothing short of wonderful. All the roast turkey and fixings you can eat and they do not run out of it. Unlimited sides, other meats and fish, soups, breads, salad and desserts. Visit the Dinner Buffet link above to see pictures of the everyday buffet. I suggest you call them for reservations on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Easter and on other National Holidays. Find their phone number by clicking on the Clarkton Hotel site link above. At their site you may also contact them via Live Chat (they have always answered me promptly).

The Clarkton is not far from Clark International Airport in the Clark Freeport Zone.

A couple of other buffet restaurants not far from the Clarkton Hotel are the Megueni Restaurant at the Holiday Inn in the Clark Freeport Zone and the Cabalen Buffet in the SM Clark Mall. Megueni features Western and Eastern food. Cabalen features Filipino and some other Asian foods and has restaurant buffets in other cities of the Philippines also.

There are many dining places in SM Clark Mall.

If you want a Vegan meal, try "Lo Han Chai" at 

Classic Savory in the mall.

If you are staying in Angeles City, you may ride a jeepney or ride a tricycle to and from these restaurants. Or, you may pay considerably more to ride in a taxi. There are always taxis waiting at the jeepney terminal at SM Clark Mall. Regardless of where you eat be sure to take a bottle of distilled or purified water with you. It is usually very hot, and you will want some as you walk and ride about. I advise you not to drink any tap water. And always ask "is the water purified and ask if the ice is made with purified water?" If both are not purified do not drink it, drink soda or beer from unopened cans or water from sealed bottles instead. I often ask for a dry glass to pour soda from a can. Even a few drops on a not quite dry glass may make you sick.

There are many American restaurants in Angeles City and in most larger cities in the Philippines.

Try some food at SM Clark food court.

Eat at one of the Vegan restaurants in Angeles City.

Try some of my favorite Filipino foods before I went Vegan.

Ask a Filipino friend if these street foods will be safe for you to eat and drink. Ask the vendor if the drink is made with purified water. I have eaten the Salted Peanuts and Banana Q before.
